Abstract

A method of aligning railway track particularly at curved sections comprises the use of two chards 1, 2 the first of which is disposed with its rearward end 3, viewed in the direction of working, in the already corrected region of track and its forward end 7 projecting into the uncorrected region of track, the end 7 being connected to the other chard 2 located in the uncorrected region of the track and the first chard 1 being used to obtain comparison values to enable the position of the track to be corrected at a point 4, which may or may not coincide with the end 5 of the chard 2. The end 7 of the chard 1 is preferably located near the centre of the chard 2 and this arrangement reduces errors which are due to the necessary portioning of the forward end 7 of the chard 1 in the uncorrected region of track. These errors may be further reduced, if desired, by connecting the end 8 of the chard 2 to the centre of a further chard. An arrangement is also described wherein when using tensioned wires to represent the chards the tension in the wires is taken by separately anchored springs so as not to distort the chard 2 where it is connected to the chard 1.
