To rectify alignment errors in permanent way tracks within a section of track G delimited by a chord 2, a value is measured at a point 1 on the track with reference to chord 2, an analogous value is calculated from this in relation to a shorter chord 3 and the track is then shifted, conveniently at the end 4 of chord 3 which is forwardly in the direction of working, until the calculated and measured values are equal. As shown in Fig. 1, the arc height F is measured, arc height f is calculated therefrom and then point 4 on the track is moved until the calculated and measured values of f are equal. In a modification, Fig. 2, either the angle α/2 is measured and then angle #/2 calculated therefrom, or angle # is calculated from angle #.
