1,199,895. Bis - (hydroxyaroxy) - dihalobenzenes. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 28 May, 1969 [1 June, 1968], No. 26940/69. Heading C2C. The invention comprises bis-(hydroxyaroxy)- dihalobenzenes of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> individually denote a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1-4 carbon atoms; each Hal is individually selected from chlorine, fluorine and bromine; and Ar is a phenylene, naphthylene, diphenylene or a polynuclear aromatic radical of the formula where Z is a bivalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic radical with 1-8 carbon atoms or -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO 2 - or -CO-, and the aromatic nucleus or nuclei of Ar may be substituted by 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy groups with 1-4 carbon atoms or halogen atoms. These compounds are prepared by reacting 1 mol. of a tetrahalobenzene of the formula with 2 mols. of dialkali metal salt of a diphenol, said salt having the formula MO-Ar.OM, in which M denotes an alkali metal, in a polar organic solvent at a temperature of from 60‹ to 180‹ C., and acidifying the reaction mixture. The dialkali metal salt of a diphenol may be prepared in situ. The examples describe the preparation of following compounds: 1,4-bis- [4 - (4 - hydroxyphenyl - isopropyl) - phenoxy]- 2,5 - dichlorobenzene; 1,3 - bis - [4 - (4 - hydroxyphenyl - isopropyl) - phenoxy] - 2,4 dichlorobenzene; 1,4 - bis - [4 - (4 - hydroxyphenyl - isopropyl) - phenoxy] - 2,5 - dibromobenzene; 1,3 - bis - [4 - (4 - hydroxyphenylsulphone) - phenoxy] - 2,4 - dichlorobenzene; 1,4 - bis - [4 - (4 - hydroxy) - diphenoxy] - 2,5 - dichlorobenzene.
