Abstract

Aryl ethers (I) which are prepared by reacting 1 mole of a tetrahalobenzene (II) with 2 moles of a dialkali phenolate of the formula MeO-Ar-OMe. In these formulae R1 and R2 are H or C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy, Hal is Cl, F or Br, and Ar is phenylene, naphthylene biphenylene or an aromatic residue (III) where Z is a divalent 1-8C (cyclo) aliphatic or araliphatic residue or -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2- or -CO- and the aromatic nuclie may carry one to four 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy groups or halogen atoms. The reaction is carried out in a polar organic solvent at 60-180 deg.C., preferably at 90-160 deg.C., and the reaction mixture is finally acidified.
