Abstract
b -Naphthylamides of o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acids (including those which, besides the aryl nuclei, contain heterocyclic rings) are manufactured by condensing an o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acid (advantageously in the form of a salt) or an o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acid halide with 2-aminonaphthalene-1-sulphonic acid or a salt thereof. The condensation may be carried out in an inert solvent (e.g. a homologue of benzene or a chlorinated or nitrated derivative of benzene or its homologues), with or without the addition of acid-binding agents (e.g. sodium or calcium carbonate or tertiary amines), or with the use of such amines as solvents. If the o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acid is not used in the form of a previously prepared halide, it is necessary to add a condensing agent (e.g. thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride or especially phosphorus trichloride, which last may be used in less than an equimolecular proportion). Minor amounts of o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acid 2-naphthylamide-1-sulphonic acids are obtained as bye-products, and may be converted to the desired b -naphthylamides by boiling with a mineral acid. In examples: (1) 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid is heated with 2-aminonaphthalene-1-sulphonic acid in chlorobenzene in the presence of sodium hydroxide and phosphorus trichloride; (2) the same reactants are heated in dimethylaniline in the presence of phosphorus trichloride; 2:21-dinaphthylamine-3-carboyl-211-naphthylamine is obtained as a bye-product; (3) the solvent in (1) is replaced by toluene, and sodium carbonate is added as well as sodium hydroxide; (4) both alkalies in (3) are omitted; (5) the 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid in (3) is replaced by salicylic acid; (6) the preformed sodium salt of 2-aminonaphthalene-1-sulphonic acid is heated with 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoyl chloride in chlorobenzene in the presence of sodium carbonate. Additional o-hydroxyarylcarboxylic acids specified are 2-hydroxycarbazole-3-carboxylic acid and 3-hydroxydiphenylene oxide-2-carboxylic acid.ALSO:A blue-violet azo dyestuff is obtained by coupling diazotized p-nitraniline with 2 : 2\sv-dinaphthylamine-3-carboyl-2"-naphthylamine of the formula <FORM:0700024/IV (c)/1>
