Abstract

Cellulose is graft polymerized with at least one monomer represented by the formula or wherein X is H or CH 3 , Y is -CN, -C 6 H 5 , -CH=CH 2 , -OCOCH 3 , -Cl, -Br or and R is H, an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, -CH 2 CH 2 OR<SP>1</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> is H or a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl group or in which R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are H or alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, so that a weight increase of 50% or more is achieved and subsequently esterified with at least one saturated aliphatic acid having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the form of a free acid, an acid chloride, an acid anhydride or a mixture thereof so that an esterification degree of 30% or more is achieved. The cellulose is, e.g. wood, leaf, stem, bast, seed fibre or pulp cellulose. In the examples, cellulose is (1) grafted with n-butyl methacrylate using ammonium cerium nitrate as initiator, esterified with butyric anhydride and neutralized with ammonia, (2) grafted with ethyl methacrylate in the presence of water and esterified and neutralized as in (1), (3) grafted with methyl methacrylate and styrene by irradiating a cellulose-monomer mixture with ultraviolet rays, and then esterified with butyric acid, (4) grafted with acrylonitrile by the method of (3) and esterified with acetic anhydride, (5) grafted with vinyl chloride in the presence of the aforesaid initiator and water, esterified with acetic acid followed by butyric anhydride and neutralized or (6) grafted with styrene and butadiene in an aqueous dispersion containing said initiator, esterified with acetic and propionic acids and neutralized. Other graft copolymers described are butyrylated or acetylated-butyrylated graft copolymers of methyl methacrylate on cellulose, butyrylated graft copolymers of styrene or vinyl chloride on cellulose and acetylated-propionylated graft copolymers of methyl methacrylate on cellulose.
