Abstract

A mixture of more than 55 parts by wt. of methyl methacrylate, 5-40 parts of a -methyl styrene and 1-10 parts of methyl, ethyl, propyl and/or n-butyl acrylate is polymerized in an aqueous emulsion at 50-140 DEG C. using as polymerization initiator 0.0001-0.1% by wt. (relative to the monomers) of sodium, potassium or ammonium persulphate and as emulsifier sodium (diamyl, dihexyl or dioctyl) sulphosuccinate, eliminating water under such conditions that the terpolymer is not heated at more than 20 DEG C. higher than the Vicat softening temperature thereof to produce a solid having a water content lower than 10% and washing the solid with methanol and/or ethanol. When 0.01-0.1% of persulphate is used, there is added to the emulsion, before the elimination of water, 0.01-0.1 parts by wt. (relative to the emulsion) of sodium or potassium sulphite, arsenite or phosphite. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of lauryl mercaptan. The water elimination may be effected using a drier with a gas-exhaust or a spray-drier. The polymer may be used to form colourless transparent moulded articles.
