1,199,375. Oxychlorination process. PRODUITS CHIMIQUE PECHINEY - SAINT - GOBAIN. 17 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23674/68. Heading C2C. 1,1,2,2 - Tetrachloroethane is obtained by passing a mixture comprising cis- and/or transdichloroethylene, HCl and an oxygen-containing gas through a reactor containing a fluidized-bed catalyst at 200‹ to 360‹ C. so that less than 70% of the dichloroethylene reacts, the catalyst being deposited on a carrier having a particle size of from 10 to 900 microns and an average specific surface area of more than 1 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and at least partially separating the 1,1,2,2 - tetrachloroethane from the reactor effluent, unreacted dichloroethylene being recycled to the reactor. The catalyst support may comprise alumina, magnesia, graphite, activated carbon, aluminosilicates, and/or clays. The mixture passed through the reactor may also contain less than 2 moles of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane per mol. of dichloroethylene. Trichloroethylene and pentachloroethane may be produced as by-products.
