Abstract

1,199,278. Treating plants. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 25 Oct., 1968 [26 July, 1967], No. 34369/67. Heading A1E. [Also in Divisions F4 and G1] The temperature and CO 2 concentration of a glasshouse or plant growth room is controlled by integrating signals proportional to photosynthetically-active radiation over set periods of time and selecting the temperature and CO 2 levels for the next period in accordance with the integrated values. The output of a radiation detector is integrated by converting it to p.r.f. modulated pulses which are counted. At the end of a pre-set time, e.g. 10 minutes a uniselector, having the steps of one bank connected to corresponding counter steps, steps round until it reaches the operative contact on the counter. Wipers on other banks of the uniselector select appropriate resistors in the circuits of a heating and ventilating controller and a CO 2 controller. If the ventilator is wide open, the supply of CO 2 is stopped to prevent waste. The system may be overridden manually or by a clock or light lever detector so as to operate only at specific times of day. The radiation signal may also be integrated over 24 hours to control the supply of water.
