Abstract
1,199,264. Apparatus for heat shrinking plastics tubing. HI SHEAR CORP. 11 March, 1969, No. 12792/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions H2, H3 and H5] Apparatus for heat-shrinking tubing on to elongated objects, e.g. electrical conductors, comprises a housing and two sets of heating elements pivotable from an open position in which the tube and elongated object can be inserted between them to a closed position in which they surround the tube. As shown, the heater assembly 10 comprises a housing 12 mounted on base 14. A plurality of hook-shaped radiant heaters 24-39 are mounted on base members 40 and 42, each base and attached heating elements defining one of the sets of heating elements. The bases 40, 42 are hinged together about a fixed bar at 62 and are supported on cams 74, 76, the cams being mounted on shaft 78 to which wheel 80 is attached. Rotation of wheel 80 through 180 degrees rotates cams 74, 76 and allows the heating elements to open from positions 32, 24 (Fig. 2), to positions 82, 84 (Fig. 2). The heating elements are preferably constructed from quartz with an embedded heating coil and are connected in parallel with adjacent pairs, e.g. 24, 25, in series. The elongated object and tube are inserted with the heaters in the open position and are moved between the closed, energized coils at the desired rate to shrink the tubing. The power supply to the heaters is preferably through a delay device which gives a high current for a short period, e.g. 1¢ sec., and then reduces the current to the rated value, thus ensuring a fast warm-up. In an alternative embodiment the heating device may have only one movable jaw and a switch which energizes the heater as the heating elements reach the closed position.
