Abstract
1,198,952. Electromagnetic brakes. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 19 July, 1968 [21 July, 1967], No. 34558/68. Heading F2E. The invention is a spring-applied, electromagnetically-released, brake with a spring adjuster at one end of the spring assembly, and an abutment (for transmitting spring force) at the other end of the assembly, and means for producing relative movement between the adjuster and the abutment to disengage the brake even when the electromagnet is not energized. As shown, a circular disc 1, slidable on but keyed to the shaft 3 of an electric motor, has bothsurfaces lined with annular bands 2 of friction material and co-operates with a portion 19 of the motor casing and an annular friction surface 5a provided on a ring 5 secured to a circular carrier plate 9. The ring and plate assembly 5, 9 is axially guided by pins 4 and urged to " brake on " position by a spring 15 surrounding a rod 7 welded to the plate. The brake is released by an electromagnet 14 which attracts an armature 6, welded to the plate 9, when the motor is switched on. The degree of compression of spring 15, and hence the braking torque, may be regulated by screwing or unscrewing a hollow adjuster bolt 13 in a hub 12 forming part of the casing 11. Once adjusted, the bolt 13 may be axially fixed by co-operation of its hexagonal head with a corresponding opening in a plate 17, subsequently bolted at 18 to the casing 11. To disengage the brake when the electromagnet is not energized, a long bolt 20, Fig. 2, has a washer 21 placed under its head; the bolt is then screwed into a threaded aperture 8 in the rod 7 so that the washer abuts the adjuster bolt 13. The bolt 20 may now be rotated to draw rod 7 and plate 9 to the left, against the force of spring 15, to disengage the brake. When not in use the long bolt 20 may be accommodated in the threaded aperture 8, Fig. 1.
