Abstract

1,198,880. Foaming cross-linked olefin-vinyl acetate copolymers. LEUNA-WERKE " WALTER ULBRICHT " VEB. 18 Nov., 1968, No. 54614/68. Headings C3C and C3P. Foams of olefin-vinyl ester copolymers are prepared by mixing the copolymer with a crosslinking agent of formula Me(OR) x , wherein Me is a metal of valency x, x is 1-5 and R is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, cross-linking the copolymer by heating at 60-300‹ C. and subsequently or simultaneously foaming the copolymer by the use of substances gaseous under the reaction temperature conditions. The foaming agents may be esters formed by the reaction of the copolymer and cross-linking agents. Conventional foaming agents such as azodicarbonic acid or diphenyl-sulphon 3,3<SP>1</SP>-disulphohydrazide may also be present. In the examples, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is cross-linked and foamed by heating with (1) azodicarbonic acid amide and either aluminum tri-isopropylate or titanium propylate-this may be preceded by heating with dicumyl peroxide; (2) di-phenyl-sulphon-3,3<SP>1</SP>-di-sulphohydrazide and a methanolic solution of sodium methylate; (3) as (1) wherein the copolymer is initially mixed with polyethylene. The copolymer, which may contain an antioxidant, may have incorporated therein inorganic fillers such as lithopone, titania, calcium carbonate and glass fibres. The cross-linked copolymers may be coated on to metal plates and then subjected to foaming.
