Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a method and apparatus for pumping dry carbon black powder, the powder is drawn into a pumping chamber 1 through an annular inlet valve 7, and discharged through an outlet valve 6, by reciprocating a diaphragm 9, or a piston or bellows, the spring-loading of valve 6 being adjustable by stem 38. The fluidity of the powder is maintained by injecting non-reactive gas through apertures 46 in a ring 45, the gas also serving to clean the valves. The inlet valve 7 is mounted on a flexible skirt 5. The locations of the inlet and outlet valves may be reversed. An application of the pump in an apparatus for converting carbon black powder into pellets is described.
