Abstract

1,198,316. Laminated patch for repairing vehicle bodywork. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 29 Aug., 1967, No. 39521/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] A patching unit for repairing damaged vehicle body panels comprises an ultra-violet lightcurable, resin-impregnated, fabric pad having one of its surfaces removably supported on a release liner and covered over its other surface by an ultra-violet light-transparent foil. The unit is stored in an envelope which is opaque to ultra-violet light. For use, a unit is removed from its envelope, the release liner is removed and the exposed sticky surface of the pad is applied to the damaged body panel. Sunlight, or another source of ultra-violet light, cures the resin, after completion of which the transparent foil may be removed. The pad may be of woven glass-fibres or other natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. polyamide, polyester or polyacrylate fibres. The resin, which has a viscosity of 800-1500 centipoises at 115‹ C. and not less than 200,000 centipoises at 24‹ C., may comprise 75 parts by weight of a polyester of maleic anhydride, isophthalic acid and propylene glycol, 25 parts of a polyester of maleic anhydride, adipic acid, o-phthalic acid and diethylene glycol and 25 parts of diallyl phthalate or triallyl cyanurate, or diallyl adipate, or allyl diglycol carbonate, or triallyl phosphite, or tetra-allyl pyromellitate, or diallyl isophthalate. The mixture of 125 parts has an unsaturation value of 0À002 to 0À003 moles of hydrogen per gram. To the mixture is added from 4 to 10 parts of either phenoxy or polyvinyl formal resin and from 2 to 3 parts of an aromatic acyloin photo-polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoin or benzoin ethyl mether. A portion of the mixture of these five components may be disolved in acetone, the resultant solution being used to impregnate the fabric pad. A further portion of the mixture, free of solvent, is applied at a temperature of about 115‹ C. to both surfaces of the impregnated pad. The ultra-violet light-transparent foil may be an oriented polyester film. The release liner may be silicone-coated paper or a foil of silicone. The liner may form part or all of the unit enclosing envelope.
