1,198,220. Bending tubes: filling. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 24 Dec., 1968 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 61422/68. Heading B3E. A tube bending process is characterized in that a straight tube to be bent is filled with a compact material 19, e.g. resin, sand, lead or metal alloy, one end of the tube is inwardly swaged at 20 and this end is placed in the rectilinear portion 5 of a channel 4 in a shaping die 2 which channel also has an elbowed portion 6 and the tube is pushed into the die by means of an hydraulic jack 14 whilst the end of the tube remote from the jack is subjected to fluid pressure which lubricates the tube in the die whilst it is being bent. The elbowed portion of the die is connected to a tank 9 containing oil having molybdenum particles in suspension and a pump 10 delivers the oil under a predetermined pressure to the elbowed portion 6. As the tube is pushed through the die the lubricant. escapes partly between the tube wall and the die to ensure adequate lubrication. This leakage is arrested by a packing gland into the end of the die adjacent the jack. An antifriction member 25, Fig. 4, may be bolted to the leading end of the tube to act as a guide. Tubes of hard metals, e.g. molybdenum stainless steel, cobalt steel, tungsten and titanium may be bent by this process and also very thin walled tubes of nickel zirconium and phosphor bronze.
