Abstract

1,197,267. Making gears; hobbing; rolling. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [5 Jan., 1968], No. 59420/68. Heading B3A, B3K, B3M. In a method of making gears a cylindrical gear blank is formed from bar stock, the outer circumferential surface is made concave before or after the gear blank 10 is mounted on a hobbing machine, Fig. 1, and teeth are rough cut into the circumferential surface of the blank after which it is mounted for rotation between two rolling dies 12, 14 having die teeth which register with the rough cut teeth of the blank, after rolling until the teeth on the blank are of a predetermined thickness the blank is rolled in finishing dies similar to 12 and 14. After finish rolling the gear may be heat treated to provide surface hardness and impact strength. After the finish rolling, the end faces of the gear have excess metal removed from them and, if necessary the diameter of the gear is machined to a predetermined size.
