A machine for filling boxes 2, 3 with cylindrical bars 1, e.g. wrapped sweets or packs of coins, comprises a feeder for dropping the bars transversely and in succession into the box, a series of sequentially operated detents a.. .# for providing a step-wise gravitational progress of the box after a required number of bars has been counted into the box by detector 23. The slide 5 is at 45 degrees so that two rows of bars, as shown, may be fed in at each step. The detents are counterweighted to the holding position shown, but are released by pneumatic cylinders A ... F respectively. These cylinders are fed through valves 16, 17 controlled alternately by a counter 25 connected to detector 23 and an over-riding detector 31 which stops the machine when the feed of bars stops. As shown, the rods are delivered from ramp 20 to the box by a three-bar rotating cage 21, but they may simply pass down the ramp under the control of a plate above them (Fig. 3, not shown). When the last detent F is retracted, the box 2 slides down under the plate 33 which serves to compress the contents and to damp its velocity. The following box 3 is delayed by pneumatically operated plungers 28, 29 until the detent a is raised. The bars may be round or square, and the layers may rest one-on-another as shown, or be interdigitated so that those in one row rest in between adjoining ones in the row below.
