1456158 Apparatus for packaging rolls in containers H J KOEHLER 28 March 1974 [11 Jan 1974] 13812/74 Heading B8C An apparatus for packing rolls, e.g. wrapped coin-rolls, in containers comprises an endless conveyer 10 which is arranged to be continuously driven, has upper and lower flights 10a, 10b, and incorporates means, such as lugs 16, forming therewith individual, roll-receiving, open-mouth, pockets which open downwardly throughout the length of the lower flight 10b, means, e.g. a hopper 40 and star-wheel gating device 46, for supplying a number of rolls to be packed equal to the number required to completely fill a container of a particular size in orderly one at-atime sequence to the open-mouth pockets of the said lower conveyer flight from whence the said rolls tend to fall by gravity, means 20 for receiving the rolls falling from said pockets and for accumulating the rolls in a progression of discrete vertical rows, each containing a preselected small number of rolls, and power means 58, actuable in response to said number of rolls having been accumulated as aforesaid, for pushing the same in unison from the accumulating means and into a container arranged to receive the same. As shown, a roll is delivered into each pocket from the zig-zag hopper 40, a star-wheel, controlled by a counting circuit, co-operating with side guide bars 48a, 48b to position the rolls axially, and side guide bars 50a, 50b and outer guide bars 52 guiding the rolls around the descending arc 10c of the conveyer 10 so that the rolls are successively delivered on to a plate 54 and then into the accumulating unit 20. The latter comprises a base 30, divider plates 34 and end plates 32a, 32b to form a number of compartments the height of each of which is substantially equal to the sum of the diameters of a pre-selected number of rolls so that, when one compartment is filled, the succeeding rolls roll over the uppermost roll in the filled, and drop into the next, compartment. The horizontally-reciprocable pusher 58, has blades 64 which are of the same height and width as a compartment and which are positioned just inside the compartments to form compartment inner side walls while the unit 20 is being filled with rolls. The upper edges of the plates 32a, 32b, 34 of the unit 34 all lie in the same plane slightly below the level of the plate 54. A carton B supported, between the end plates 32a, 32b, on an extension 30a of the base 30, is adapted to receive a load of rolls from the unit 34 when all of the compartments of the latter are completely filled whereupon the conveyer 10 is stopped and the pusher 58 is actuated to push the rolls from the compartments into the carton B. The accumulator unit 20 and the pusher 58 are demountable to allow for the substitution of similar units and pushers for handling rolls of different sizes.
