The sodium content of a fibrous amorphous carbon product is reduced by contacting it with an aqueous solution of hydrobromic and/or hydriodic acid, preferably by immersion, and thereafter firing in an inert atmosphere or vacuum at a temperature sufficient to effect reaction between the acid and sodium and volatilization of the reaction product substantially without increase in the thermal and electrical conductivity of the product, which temperature is suitably between 1500‹ and 2100‹ F. Initially low levels of K, Ca, Mg and Li in the sample are maintained or further reduced after the treatment. The carbon fibre is prepared by carbonizing cotton, rayon or like cellulosic material.
