Abstract

1,197,008. Graphite structures. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 15 May, 1968, No. 23040/68. Heading C1A. Vermicular graphite is compressed to form a compact of density at least 40 lb/ft<SP>3</SP> (0À64 g/cc.), the compact is treated with an effective intercalating agent for a time sufficient to allow penetration, and then heated to a temperature of 100-500‹C. to give a low density, low thermal conductivity compact. The intercalating agent may be fuming nitric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, liquid bromine, CrO 2 Cl 2 , aqueous HClO 4 , or a mixture of concentrated sulphuric and concentrated nitric acids. The compression of the graphite is preferably uniaxial, but biaxial, triaxial, radial or isostatic compression may be employed. The treatment with intercalating agent may be accompanied by heating.
