Abstract

1,196,161. Pipe couplings. R. C. NEWLAND (ENG.) Ltd. 5 April, 1968 [5 Jan., 1967], No. 744/67. Heading F2G. An electrically insulated coupling for Combustible materials comprises an electrically insulating sealing element 9 having a thickness not exceeding À010 inch clamped between end faces of coupling members 5, 6 and fastening means 13 engaging and interconnecting both the members and insulated from one of the members. As shown, the members 5, 6 have flanges 7, 8 are pressed into engagement with a washer 9 of mica, for example, by screws 13 which act also as torque-transmitting elements, each screw being preferably provided with a coating of a plastics sealant such as an epoxy resin mixture before insertion; a mica and a metal washer is disposed under the head of each screw and an insulating bush 14 surrounds the shanks of the screws. After assembly of the coupling, the internal bore may be coated with an epoxy or other resin as indicated at 15. A flanged metal sleeve 16 is fitted over the joint to seat against a rim 17 of the flange 7 and to provide an annular space which is filled with an epoxy resin sealant 18. In modifications, (a) the screws 13 are dispensed with the flanges 7, 8 being clamped together by a metal sleeve having a flange fitting over the flange 8 and an opposite edge which is swaged over a bevelled edge part of the flange 7, torque forces being absorbed by dowel pins of metal or a plastics material coated with a plastics material sealant before insertion; depressions in the flange 7 receive deformed portions of the sleeve or a portion of the sleeve is rolled inwardly into a peripheral recess in the flange; the flanges 7, 8 and the sleeve may be non- circular in shape or one non-circular flange may fit within a similarly shaped recess in the other flange, and (b) screws 13 and dowel pins are both used. Prior to insertion of the screws the screw-threaded holes thereof may be filled with a liquid resin sealant, or slots may be formed in the flanges leading from the periphery of the flanges to the screw holes whereby the holes are filled with the sealant 18.
