Abstract
1196034 Coin recognition SIEMENS AG 7 Aug 1967 [5 Aug 1966 10 Aug 1966] 36105/67 Headings G4V and VP2A1 An automatic coin recognition arrangement scans raised parts of a coin to derive a characteristic electric pulse signal from which the coin is recognized. In a first embodiment, each side of a coin is scanned in a circle by a sensing lever, the waveforms from the two levers being differentiated to produce pulses which are counted. The counts from the two sides are added, the correct sum indicating the coin is genuine. In a second embodiment, the two sensing levers actuate respective microphones each of which feeds a respective transformer having two secondaries which deliver pulse trains representing the positive and negative portions of the input respectively. The "positive" pulse train relating to each side of the coin is compared with two "positive" reference pulse trains, one for each side of the coin. Similar comparisons are done for the "negative" pulse trains. This makes the backto-front orientation of the coin irrelevant. The coin is indicated as valid if, for both sides of the coin, the "positive" train agrees with one of the "positive" reference trains and the "negative" train agrees with one of the "negative" reference trains. Since the sensing levers may not start at a standard position relative to the coin designs, the reference trains are applied repetitively with successive displacements. A third embodiment uses one end of a piece of cable to sense each side of the coin in a "grid", the other end being scanned in a circle and the resulting signals being analysed as in the second embodiment. A fourth embodiment uses such a cable and eight sensing levers for each side of the coin, a transistorized logic circuit looking for a particular pattern of energized and non-energized levers on both sides.
