Abstract

1336311 Force measurement, measuring force electrically BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 14 Sept 1971 [15 June 1970] 28858/70 Heading G1N and G1W In order to determine and change longitudinal force in a rail, wires 3 and 4 are disposed at right angles in a hole in the rail, and each is set in vibration for Example by a pulse through an electromagnetic coil associated with the wire. The frequency of vibration,. which is dependent on the deformed shape of the hole and hence the load in the rail, is detected as current pulses induced in the coil and counted over unit time. The coil may also be used to measure the rail temperature by measuring the change in its electrical resistance. Piezo-electric devices may replace the coils, and a single coil may actuate both wires.
