A stay for hinged doors, gates, casements, lids and covers comprises a stay bar 10 located in a bracket 15 having upper and lower horizontal members 15a and 15c spaced apart to allow the stay bar 10 to slide lengthwise between them while resting on the lower member 15c, the bar 10 having one or more substantially vertical shoulders 10b near its free end so arranged that when the door 12 is sufficiently opened the shoulders 10b will drop on passing through the bracket 15 to engage with the end of the lower member 15c and thus prevent reverse sliding of the bar 10 until the shoulders 10b are lifted by raising the bar. Preferably the bracket 15 consists of a top wall 15a, depending sides 15b and inwardly turned lower portions 15c, and is pivotally attached to a mounting device 16 screwed to the door frame 18. The fixed end of the stay bar 10 is pivoted to a bracket 11 screwed to the door 12, and the free end is cranked at its extremity 10c to prevent total withdrawal of the bar 10 from the bracket 15. In one embodiment, a vertical rod 14 is attached to the stay bar 10 near its fixed end to enable the door to be closed by lifting the bar slightly and disengaging the shoulders 10b. In another embodiment (not shown) the lifting and disengaging is performed by means of a cord, attached to a lever depending pivotally from the 'bracket 15, and extending along the stay bar 10 and passing through a loop depending from the bar near its fixed end, such that a pull on the cord causes the lever to bear against the underside of the bar 10 and raise the shoulders 10b.
