Abstract
1,195,908. Piston rings; seals. JOY MFG. CO. 25 July, 1967 [25 July, 1966], No. 34187/67. Headings F2B and F2T. The segments of carbon or P.T.F.E. packing rings for a compressor piston or rod are each provided with a passageway 38, Fig. 2, which is spaced from the sealing peripheral surface and allows the gas to flow past the ring through the passageway when the peripheral surface has been worn down to meet the passageway. The passageways may take the form of bores 38 for passing the gas directly through the ring or of radial grooves 44, Fig. 4, for passing the gas along the sides and around the back of the ring, Fig. 6, the arrangement allowing the gas to pass to the next ring or produce leakage to indicate that the packing is worn. The grooves may be stepped, Fig. 8 (not shown), or a series of bores provided at different radii so that the load is transferred gradually to the next ring. Garter springs are employed when the packing is used for the rod.
