Abstract

1,195,852. Separating hydrogen by diffusion. UNION -CARBIDE CORP..6 July, (1967, No. 31165/67. Heading B1L. Hydrogen of high purity is separated from impunities present in a feedstock by passing the feed gas by line 23 to, a guard chamber 25 filled with an adsorbent, e.g. a molecular sieve, then by lines 27 and 31 to a conditioner 33 containing a hydrogenation or a combined hydrogenation-deoxygenation catalyst, before heating the stream in heater 37 and passing the heated stream, at a temperature adequate for diffusion, e.g. about 400‹C., by line 39 .to elongated diffuser 43 where the stream is caused to impinge on the 'palladium or palladium alloy foil surfaces of a number of diffusion drum elements. Pure hydrogen which diffuses through these surfaces is taken from the elements by line 89, and depleted feedstock by .line 87. Suitably, both take-off streams are passed in indirect heat exchange with feedstock in a heat exchanger 3.9. In Figs. 2-4 (not shown), constructional details of the diffuser and of the diffusion elements are provided. In the examples, the feedstock comprised 50-60% hydrogen, the remainder comprising mostly methane with very .small amounts of other gaseous hydrocarbons.
