Abstract

1,181,310. Separating krypton and xenon. LEUNA-WERKE WALTER ULBRICHT. 8 Sept., 1967, No. 41156/67. Heading B1L. A mixture of 55% Kr, 5% Xe and 45% N 2 , O z and A in gasholder 17 is drawn by compressor 5 through valve 3 into line 4 and thence to activated carbon adsorption column 7. Before breakthrough, this gas flow is stopped by switching valve 3 to allow only H 2 as carrier gas, to flow from gasholder 1 along lines 2 and 4 to column 7. As the H 2 passes through column 7 the N 2 , O 2 and A are entrained first through line 8, valve 9 and line 20 to liquid N 2 trap 23 where they are liquefied; the H 2 carrier passes on through heat exchanger 22 and line 24, back to gasholder 1. When first Kr and then Xe emerges in the carrier gas from column 7, they are detected by thermal conductivity cell 19. The Kr fraction is passed by line 10, valve 11 and line 12 to freeze trap 14. The Xe fraction is driven off from column 7 by heating to 70‹C., and is conveyed by line 10, valve 11 and line 25 to freeze trap 27. The effluent H 2 carrier gas from traps 14 and 27 are returned to gasholder 1 by line 16. The Kr and Xe fractions are subsequently removed by lines 44 and 45 respectively.
