Abstract

1,195,158. Detergent compositions. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 27 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 46028/68. Heading C5D. A detergent composition comprises (1) an organic surfactant, (2) a water-soluble cationic nitrogen-containing polymer having a molecular weight from 2000-3,000,000 and a cationic charge density greater than 0À001, said polymer being (a) a quaternary-ammoniumsubstituted cellulose ether derivative, (b) a polymer at least 30 mole per cent of the molecular structure of which is composed of quaternizedvinylimidazole, quaternized diethylaminoethyl acrylate, quaternized dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate or quaternized p-dimethylaminomethyl styrene monomeric units, or a combination thereof, (c) a linear polyamine at least 50 mole per cent of the molecular structure of which is composed of monomeric units of the structure in which A is alkylene (C 2-3 ) of which at least two carbon atoms extend in a chain between the adjoining nitrogen atoms and R and R<SP>1</SP> are each hydrogen or methyl, or (d) a polymer of tetraethylene pentamine and epichlorohydrin having the structure in which x is an integer such that the polymer has viscosity of 21-42 centipoises at 74‹ F., and (3) a water-insoluble or sparingly soluble particulate substance capable of imparting a desired residual property to a surface to which it becomes affixed. In a modification, the water-soluble cationic nitrogen-containing polymer may be a polyalkylene polyamine with repeating -C-C-N groups in a highly branched structure or a water-soluble dimethyldialkyl quaternary ammonium chloride. The preferred water-insoluble or sparingly soluble particulate substances are heavy metal salts of 2 - pyridinethiol - 1 - oxide, 3,4,4<SP>1 </SP>- trichlorocarbanilide, 3,4,5 - tribromosalicylanilide, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dichloro - 3 - (trifluoromethyl) carbanilide, bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3,5,6 - trichlorophenyl) methane, N - trichloromethylmercapto - 4 - cyclohexene - 1,2 - dicarboximide, N - (1,1<SP>1</SP>, 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- tetrachloroethylsulphenyl) - cis - A - 4 - cyclohexene - 1,2 - dicarboximide or mixtures thereof, which have anti-microbial, fabric brightening or whitening properties and which create a favourable skin feel after washing. The organic surfactant may be any amphoteric, anionic, polar non-ionic, non-ionic, zwittenonic or cationic. Additional additives include organic solvents, e.g. ethanol; thickeners, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose, magnesium aluminium silicate, hydroxyethylcellulose or methylcellulose; perfumes; sequestering agents, e.g. E.D.T.A. (Na salt); opacifiers, e.g. zinc or magnesium stearate; suds boosters, e.g. coconut acyl mono- or di-ethanolamides; salts, e.g. sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, or sodium carbonate; bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide; sodium tripolyphosphate; potassium toluenesulphonate; dyes, e.g. ultramarine blue; diphosphonates; potassium silicate or sodium silicates; tarnish inhibitors, e.g. benzotriazole. The composition may be in granular, flake, liquid or tablet form.
