Abstract

1,194,739. Moulding pipe insulation. MICROPORE INSULATION Ltd. 23 Jan., 1969 [11 Nov., 1967], No. 51410/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] Thermal insulation material is formed into the desired shape by injecting the material into a confining envelope of porous material, passing said envelope containing the insulating material between rollers to impart the desired shape thereto and treating the insulating material and/or the envelope to render it substantialy rigid. The confining envelope is preferably of cylindrical form and is passed continuously over the end of a mandrel through which the insulation material is injected into the envelope. The insulating material may be a wet slurry which is heated after shaping or may be a powdered microporous material, the envelope being coated with a rigidizing material after shaping, the microporous material may be a silica aerogel and the envelope glass fibre which is coated with a ceramic stiffener. In the embodiment shown the envelope 11 is made by wrapping overlapping layers of glass fibre 13 around a mandrel 10 and sticking the glass fibre with adhesive from container 14. Insulating material is supplied from hopper 15 and through the mandrel 10 by screw 16 and partially fills the tube which is forced into shape between rollers 12. The glass fibre is then impregnated and hardened.
