Abstract

1,126,297. Tobacco smoke filters. CARRERAS Ltd. 15 Aug., 1967 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8514/67. Heading A2C. A cigarette filter plug comprises a wrapper tube containing a mixture of a granular filtering material and a granular expansible material, which expansible material has been expanded by heat or chemical action to fill any voids in the tube filling. Preferably a wrapper tube containing a mixture of carbon granules and polystyrene granules held between two fibrous end caps is subjected to induction heating whereby the carbon granules heat up and pass their heat on to the polystyrene which is thereby expanded. Other suitable expansible materials are vermiculite, hydrated silicates, hydrated borates, silica gel, and perlite aggregate. Radiant, conducted, dielectric or microwave heating may be used for the expansion process.
