Abstract

1,194,474. Alkyl phosphate salts of hydrocarbyl-substituted polyamines. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 4 March, 1968 [9 March. 1967], No. 10465/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A composition of general formula in which X is a linear polyamine containing from 2 to 6 N atoms, each two adjacent N atoms being linked by C 3 -C 6 alkylene groups, or is a piperazine derivative substituted on one or both N atoms with an amino-aliphatic group or a mixture thereof with the linear polyamine, the polyamine or said substituted piperazine derivative being substituted on N by an average of from 1 to 2 hydrocarbon radicals substantially free of aromatic unsaturation and of molecular weight 400-5000, any remaining valencies of the N atoms being occupied by H atoms and at least one terminal N atom being substituted by a H atom, Z is at least one and up to an amount equal to 90% of the titratable amine nitrogen, A is C 8 -C 24 alkyl and B is H or C 8 -C 24 alkyl, is prepared by adding the requisite amount of phosphate ester to an N hydrocarbyl polyamine either neat or in a solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon medium. Usually, the compositions will have the general formula where is a number averaging from 1 to 2, y is an integer from 1 to 5, U is C 2 -C 6 alkylene, R is a hydrocarbyl radical as defined above and Z, A and B are as above. The hydrocarbyl group R may be aliphatic or alicyclic, may be a polymer or copolymer of C 2 -C 6 olefins or may be derived from naturally occurring products of relatively high molecular weight, e.g. naph thenic bright stock or neutral oils and specified groups R are polyisobutylene, polypropylene and poly-4-methylpent-1-ene. The polyamine may be ethylene diamine, diethylene or dipropylene triamine, tetraethylene pentamine, 1,3- or 1,2-propylenediamine, tetramethylene diamine, triethylene tetramine, N-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine or N,N-di-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine. The compositions are used as fuel additives.
