Abstract

1,194,191. Moulding cellular articles. VINATEX Ltd. 6 May, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 21141/67. Heading B5A. Microcellular articles are moulded from natural or synthetic polymers by injecting a polymer composition containing a blowing agent into a cavity in a mould, and retracting one or more cores from the mould during or after injection; the injection temperature being above the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent. The cores are preferably of uniform cross-section in their direction of movement, fit closely in the holes in the mould wall and when fully retracted co-operate with the rest of the mould to define the shape of the article being moulded. They may be totally removed and the mould wall stopped by other objects. The cores preferably occupy at least 75% of the mould volume initially and the injection cylinder for the piston injector is preferably mounted in the core so that it is retractable with the core and the nozzle is positioned in the end of the core in the mould cavity. The moulding may be carried out in stages; injecting polymer, partly withdrawing one or more cores and repeating. One or more of the mould surfaces may be coated to assist the formation of a surface skin on the polymer moulding.
