A refractory coated lance intended for use in a steel making process comprises an elongated tube 1 of metal around which is wrapped a plurality of layers 4 of chemically-bonded refractory aggregate, each layer being separated from the next by metal foil 3 which covers also the outer layer of refractory material, the foil having a melting point equal to or greater than that of aluminium. In a method of making the lance, the refractory aggregate is mixed with a chemical binder and is made into a paste by the addition of water and a small amount of clay. The paste is then spread over the foil which is then wrapped around the tube and subsequently dried. The foil material may comprise aluminium, or steel. Examples of preferred aggregates are calcined bauxite, calcined fire clay, dead-burned magnesite, olivine, kyanite, tubular alumina, zircon, chrome ore, and ground slag. The chemical binder may comprise calcium aluminate cement, sodium silicate, sodium phosphate, soluble chromate and phosphate salts, chromic acid, phosphoric acid, epsom salts, magnesium chloride, nitrecake or lignnosulphonate liquor.
