Abstract
1,193,585. Self-regulating PTC resistors. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 April, 1968 [4 April, 1967], No. 15537/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] A PTC resistor of barium-lead titanate having a resistance that increases by ten-fold at a temperature of approximately 340‹ C. is mounted in plate form 1 in a soldering-iron having copper walls 6 and a copper soldering tip 7. Current applied to metal foils 2,3 flows through resistance 1 in the direction i, foils 2, 3 being insulated from walls 6 by mica foils 4, 5. When not used for soldering, the operating temperature is 350-360‹ C. This temperature prevails throughout the plate and the current remains small. During soldering, below 340‹ C., heat is emitted from tip 7 at W and thus a temperature gradient occurs along walls 6 and plate 1, the coldest area being adjacent tip 7. At the hottest end (right), a small current flows and substantially no more heat is produced. If a large quantity of heat is required the low temperature zone is enlarged further to the right and the development of heat automatically matches the need for heat. In a modification (Fig. 2), tip 7 is joined to a thermally conducting central plate (8), several plate-form resistances 1 being provided on either side of plate (8).
