.H. VW. WHITED PORTABLE ELECTRIC LUMBER AND TIMBER GRADE MARKING DEVICE FiledJuly 6 1925 Patented Dec. 7, 1926.
y UNITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE. l
HARRY W. WHITED. OF NACGBOGHES'. TEXAS.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LUMIBER.y ANTD TIMBER GRADE-MARKING DEVICE.
Application filed July 6.
The presentin'vention relates to a device for marking suitable indicia on lumber and tii'nber to indicate the grade thereof and has for its principal object to provide a device of this nature which is electrically heated so as te burn the indicia into the lumber er timber.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is portable, simple in construction, strong, durable, easy to handle, eilicient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in` view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through the device embodying the features of my invention,
Fig. 2 is another sectional view therethrough at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a guard used with the device,
Fig. 4 is an elevation of said guard, and
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a holder and stencil which are separable.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 5 designates a handle having a tubular shank 6 extending therethrough adapted to receive an electric cord. A head 7 is formed on the end of the shank 6 and has a depending flange portion 8 to which is bolted as at 9 a core plate 10 having formed on its end a stencil 11. Binding posts 12 are mounted in the upper portion of the core plate 10, being insulated therefrom in any suitable manner as is indicated in dotted lines at 13 and to which are attached the conductors of the electric cord passing through the hollow shank 6. Suitable electric heating elements 14 are disposed about the core 10 and connected with the binding posts 12. A casing 15 is disposed about the heating elements 14 and houses the casing 7 attached to said head by screws 16. The lower edge 0f the casing rests on the upper portion of the stencil 11. The stencil 11 is provided with suitable indicia so that when the core 10 is heated by the electric heating elements 14,
1925. serial No. 41,705.
said indicia may be burnt into lumber or timber.
lf desired, the core 10 may be formed with a grooved head 17 to receive a removable stencil 18, Figure 5. A guard is disposed about the shank 6 between the handle and the head and consists of a hub 19 for receiving the shank, this hub 19 being engaged with the shank by a set screw 20. A plurality of spokes 21 radiate from the hub 19 and support a ring Q2 concentrically about the hub. This shield allows the device to be supported on its side with the hot stencil out of the way so as to prevent the same from coming intocontact with wood or other inllaminable material accidentally.
1t is obvious, of course, that the ring 22 may be constructed of a polygonal formation if desired. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what l' claim as new isz- 1. A device of the class described including a tubular shank, a handle on the shank, a head formed on the end of this shank, a core bolted to the head, a stencil on the core at the end thereof remote from the head, electric heating elements disposed about the core, a casing disposed about the electric heating elements and about the head, and a guard disposed about and at right angles to the shank and between the handle and the casing and spaced from the heel portion of the casing.
2. A device of the class described including a shank, a core on the shank, a stencil on the core at the end thereof remote from the shank, electric heating means about the core, a hub disposed on the shank, spokes radiating from the hub, and a ring yon said spokes; said hub, spokes and ring spaced from the heel portion of the heating means.
3. A device of the class described including a tubular shank, a handle on the tubular shank, a hub on the tubular shank, a set screw in he hub to lock the hub to the Shank, spokes radiating from the hub, 2L ring ou the Spokesfa head on the shank at die opposite side of the hub, with reference 0 the handle, a flange extending from the head, a coie bolted to the Harigea a stencil et the end of the core remote from said head electric heating elements about the Core, and binding posts on the Core conneeted to the electric heating elements, said 10 tubula shank adapted to receive an elec trie Cord with its Conductors attached to the binding post, and ay casing disposed about the eieoti'ic heating elemente and he head.
