Abstract

1,193,434. Fusion welding. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 7 June, 1967 [11 May, 1966; 3 June, 1966], Nos. 20838/66 and 24884/66. Heading B3R. Apparatus for feeding a consumable electrode or filler wire or strip in a welding process, comprises a rotatable circular body 3, an endless resilient band 4 arranged to press the wire or strip 1 into contact with the body over an arc of its periphery, drive means to cause rotation of the body 3 and a guide conduit 6 to receive the wire or strip as it is fed from the diverging surfaces of the band 4 and body 3. The apparatus may include means for detecting a blockage or restriction of the feed comprising a hollow detector conduit, e.g. a spring 2 through which the wire 1 passes, the spring 2 being mounted between insulating blocks 3 and being connected to an electrical contact 4; deflection of the wire into contact with the spring due, e.g. to a blockage completes a circuit from electrical contact 5 which may be employed to cut off the power supply, stop the feed and/or operate a warning signal. Alternatively lateral displacement of the wire or strip towards the wall of the conduit may be used to alter the inductance or capacitance of an electrical circuit in order to produce an electrical signal indicating a restriction to the feed.
