A method of preventing sulphide formation on a silver surface comprises rendering the surface passive by cataphoresis in an aqueous solution containing beryllium sulphate and polyvinyl alcohol, the pH of the aqueous solution being from 5À6 to 5À8. Such a solution contains colloidal beryllium oxide. Ammonium hydroxide may be used to adjust the pH to the require value. The current density of the cataphoresis may be 8-10 mA/dm<SP>2</SP>. Silver electrical contacts or jewellry may be so passivated.
