Abstract

1,193,233. Coating webs. TRANSPARENT PAPER Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 4035/68. Heading D1L. In the passage of a web through a coating bath and metering and smoothing chamber and thence through a drying tower, the bath is composed of an outer trough having a web inlet opening along one side and a liquid outlet at its base, and an inner tiltable subsidiary trough above which a liquid inlet is situated. The trough-shaped apron of Specification 1193232 may also be included inside the subsidiary trough. The coating 'liquid may be heated and may overflow from the inner to the outer trough with recycling during operation. Webs of regenerated cellulose or paper may be treated. As shown, the subsidiary trough 51 is tiltable about a pivot 52 to discharge liquid into the outer trough 46 which is lowered by means of an arm 49 pivoted at a point 50. Alternatively (Figs. 1, 2 and 3), the subsidiary trough may be attached to the outer trough and both tilted, the outer trough in this case being provided with an inturned lip (21) at the lower edge of the opening.
