In a method of folding and packing stockings, a pair of stockings and a folding card are placed on a perforated plate 2 to which suction is applied to hold the stockings and card in engagement with the plate and the stockings are folded and covered by a cover sheet 11, the plate together with the folded, covered stockings thereon being swung through 180 degrees about a horizontal axis 4 to deposit the stockings on a slide 5, the suction then being discontinued and the plate swung back to its initial position; the slide is operated to insert the folded stockings into a bag. As shown, a pair of stockings A is placed on the support table 1 so that the parts of the stockings to be visible in the packing are laid in the plate 2 and a perforated card is laid on these parts. Pins 7, 8, which may run parallel to each other or operate in opposition to each other, are slid by pneumatically-operated cylinders 9 in a transverse direction to fold the stockings and then retracted into sleeves 7a, 8a, after which a cover sheet 11 is placed in position. Suction is applied to the plate 2 via hollow axle 4 and arms 3, and the plate swung about the axle 4 so that the stockings, card and cover sheet come to lie on the slide 5, when the suction is discontinued; by a compressed air cylinder 13 the slide 5 inserts the stockings into a bag 16 of transparent material.
