Abstract
1,192,970. Thermionic cathode tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 Aug., 1967 [27 Aug., 1966], No. 39440/67. Heading H1D. In a high vacuum discharge tube for high voltages, e.g. a ballast tube for use in colour television receivers, which comprises an anode cylinder 5 closed at one end by a surface 7 perpendicular to the cylinder axis, a cathode 8 outside the anode and surrounded by a cathode screen 10 which has surfaces 13 arranged spaced from and opposite the open end of the anode, an auxiliary screen 15 is provided which is situated surrounding the open end of the anode and between part of the envelope and the cathode screen 10 such that electrons liberated from the surfaces 13 by X-radiation from anode surface 7, which radiation is itself produced by electron bombardment, are prevented from reaching the tube wall and are constrained to move towards the anode cylinder. The auxiliary screen 15 may, as shown, comprise a stepped annular member coaxial with the anode and affixed to the cathode screen 10. Alternatively, Fig. 2 (not shown), the auxiliary screen may be an annular cylinder affixed to the wall of the device, and may be electrically connected to the cathode or to the cathode screen.
