Abstract

1,192,950. Making electrical connections; stamping; shearing. AMP Inc. 22 Oct., 1968 [21 Nov., 1967], No. 52917/67. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for trimming and splicing wires comprises a die 3 movable towards a die 4 to crimp a U-section connector 87 to a pair of wires (X, Y), Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of wire trimming edges 39, 41 extending lengthwise of the path of movement of the die 3, and a pair of associated rotatable blades 32, 36 for trimming the wires between the ends of the connector. As shown, the lower, stationary die 4 has curling surfaces 5 for closing the limbs of the connector, and the upper die 3 is flat and operated through a one-revolution-clutch, by an A.C. induction motor. Feeding.-A strip of connectors, joined by bridges of insulation, is advanced in steps by a pivoted lever 18 having a peg 24 which projects through a slot 51 in a feed channel to engage holes in the bridges. A spring-pressed plate (not shown) pressing the connectors upwardly into the channel is deflected downwardly as the die 3 engages the end connector, thus freeing the strip of connectors from the peg 24 and allowing the feed arm 18 to make a return stroke through contact between a cam 14 on the die 3 and a follower 16 on the arm 18. When the die 3 has returned after crimping, the cam 14 permits a feed stroke of the arm by the arm's return spring 22. An end 48 of the feed channel engages behind (Fig. 2) a stop-plate 44 for the connectors and forms a passage 50 for the die 3. Shearing.-The ends (XE, YE) of wires in passages 60, 61 in rubber &c. guides 52, 54 extend beneath the effective zone of the adjacent shear blades, upwardly to be trimmed by the opposite blades as these are turned about a pivot 34 by pins 21 projecting beneath the die 3. A stationary plate 26 has a projection 30 against which the insulation bridges are sheared by the die 3 as this lowers a connector towards the die 4. In various modifications, the die 3 may include a connector guide which is retractable into the die against spring-pressure. The guide may bias the connector towards the shearing block 40, the press may be disposed horizontally or at an angle to the horizontal and the die 4 may be uppermost. The guide blocks 52, 54 may be of rigid material and movable away from the die 3, and the press may be operated by fluid-pressure or through a linkage, by one or more rotatable handles. The wire-trimming blades may be turned about different axes, preferably for use with offset trimming edges, so that the wires are not crossed. A flat lower die may be used to which the connectors are fed, the shear plate 26 being fixed to the movable die, and the feed mechanism replaced by one for engaging upstanding tongues 66 on the connectors. The apparatus may be a hand tool or mounted on a rack or bench.
