Abstract

1,192,946. Artificial insemination device. C. M. DUNCAN. 22 Aug., 1968 [12 Oct., 1967], No. 46677/67. Heading ASR. A cartridge tube to contain semen comprises a plastics tube containing a plug at one end which may be used as a piston for the ejection of semen from the other end of the tube and which 'is formed from a mixture consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and elements capable of rendering the mixture porous, compressed axially within the tube. The elements may be polyvinyl alcohol granules, with or without cellulose ether granules, or polyvinyl chloride peals.' A quantity of the mixture is inserted in the tube at one end, compressed between plungers, and then caused to adhere to form a porous plug by subjecting the mixture to humid air. A solution containing semen is drawn in by applying a vacuum to the porous plug. The tube may be sealed at the opposite end to the plug by polyvinyl alcohol powder. When the tube is immersed in water the polyvinyl alcohol powder gells and the plug is sealed to form a cartridge.
