Counters actuated by reciprocating-mechanism, counters affording several rates of actuation.-In a device for indicating the rectangular components of the movement of a ship &c., an electric motor 1, Figs. 1 and 2, driven at a speed corresponding with the speed of the vessel, turns a crank 4 connected by a link 5 to a rocking frame 6, 7, which is pivoted at 8 and carries pawls 11, 12 engaging ratchet-wheels 13, 14 arranged to actuate counters 17, 18. The movements imparted by the pawls 11, 12 to the ratchet-wheels 13, 14 are regulated by masking-devices 32, 33 carried by rocking bars 28, 29 having extensions 26, 27 bearing on cams 24, 25. An electric motor 20 operated by a gyrocompass transmitter &c. turns a worm-wheel 22 and thereby positions the cams 24, 25 in accordance with the direction of movement of the ship. The arrangement of the masking-devices 32, 33 and the manner in which they are controlled may be modified, The device may be utilized for causing a pencil &c. to move over a chart, wheels 70, 71, Fig. 4 (corresponding to the wheels 13, 14, Figs. 1 and 2), being geared to screwed spindles 80, 87, which are arranged to actuate a pencil carriage 78 in directions at right-angles to one another.
