Abstract

119,240. Gloess, M. P. P. April 17, 1917, [Convention date]. Film evaporators. -The material to be dried passes downwards through a conduit, the walls of which are heated by a descending stream of hot air which passes into the conduit at the bottom and ascends therein. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the material is carried in a series of baskets f mounted on an endless chain g and passing downwards through a cylindrical casing b. The hot air descends between the cylinder b and an outer casing a, passes through openings d and finally escapes at the top of the cylinder. The admission of cold air is regulated by a sliding valve c. In a modified arrangement, the baskets are arranged in the annular space between the cylinders and the air passes down the central cylinder. instead of using a conveyer, the material may fall by gravity, its descent being retarded by rotating vanes h, Fig. 2, carried on a central vertical shaft 1. When a liquid is to be evaporated to dryness, the liquid is carried through the chamber on an endless band and the dried material is detached as the band passes out of the chamber.
