Abstract
1,192,252. Separating hydrogen by diffusion. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 30 Jan., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967]. No. 4837/ 68. Heading B1L. [Also in Division F2] A palladium or palladium alloy tube 7 extending through a header tube sheet wall 4 of hydrogen diffusion apparatus, is sealingly secured to the wall by a body 1 which has a tube-receiving bore 2 and which is welded to the wall at one end and provided with a frusto-conical end face 6 at the other, a first ferrule 9 having frusto-conical end faces 11 and 12, a second ferrule 13 of harder material than that of the first ferrule and having frusto conical and planar end faces 14 and 18 respectively, a tubular bush 8 within the tube and of harder material than that of the first ferrule, and a nut 15 screwed onto the body 1 causing bearing between the cooperating end faces of the ferrules and the body, between the bore of the first ferrule and the tube, and between the bore of the tube and the bush. In the diffusion apparatus of Fig. 3, a plurality of coiled tubes are each connected to end walls in the manner described above, said endwalls defining an inlet chamber 26 for feed gas, a collecting chamber 22 for diffused hydrogen, and an outlet chamber 28 for the throughput gas. In alternative arrangement (not shown, a single end wall supporting one or more diffusion tubes closed at one end inside chamber 22 may be used. The palladium, alloy used for tube 7 may be a palladium-silver, palladium boron, or a palladium-gold alloy. A suitable palladium-silver alloy comprises 75% Palladium: 25% silver by weight. The first ferrule preferably surface-roughened by oxidation, may be of copper, annealed copper-nickel alloy, silver, and aluminium, the second harder ferrule may be made from stainless steel, coldworked copper-nickel alloy, or carbon steel, and the bush may be of stainless or carbon steel.
