Breaking.-Steel bars are broken by making one or two incisions E, F in the plane where the bar is to be divided and applying two knives G, H on opposite sides of the bar in the plane of division but not in the regions where it is incised. The knives are submitted to the action of a press or to the shock of a falling weight. No bending stress is produced in the bar.
