Abstract

1,191,699. Centrifugal casting. SULZER BROS Ltd. 19 July, 1967 [20 July, 1966], No. 33145/67. Heading B3F. In a method of testing foundry mould materials a rotatable mould 1 is formed with a cavity 2 the surface of which at least in part is formed by the material to be tested, the cavity then being filled with liquid metal and a test casting centrifugally cast to produce radially varying pressures on the cavity surface. The casting is removed from the mould and the surface of the casting is examined for signs of sintering or metal penetration. The mould 1 may be completely constructed of the foundry material (e.g. sand) to be tested and used only once; or it may be made as a two-part permanent mould, e.g. ceramic, graphite or steel, and have specimens 8 of the material to be tested inserted in the surface of the cavity 2. To produce a uniform flooding of all surfaces of the cavity the cavity may be shaped as a truncated hyperboloid, Fig. 4 (not shown), having a compensation space (13) to allow for the portion lost by truncation. The liquid metal is fed into the cavity by means of a duct (10) leading to the outer periphery of the cavity. To ascertain the effect of different pouring temperatures a number of identical moulds may be poured with the same liquid metal but at differing temperatures.
