Abstract
1,191,597. Dispensing measured quantities of liquids. TECHNICON CORP. 31 July, 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 36620/68. Heading B8N. [Also in Division F1] A peristaltic pump comprising a plurality of side-by-side arranged flexible tubes 74, Fig. 2, rollers 40 sequentially engaging the tubes driven through a sprocket chain 38, sprocket 36 and gearing by an electric motor (not shown) and releasable means causing fluid flow which includes a resilient platen 59 whose upper part 60 is secured to side walls 52 pivoting about a pin 56 and releasably held by a lock assembly 78, includes additional means for normally occluding at least one of the tubes, e.g. tube 74A, Fig. 3, at a location down-stream of the platen, which additional means is adjustable and periodically releasable between each occasion a roller releases the tubes 74. The additional means comprises a pressing pin 128 secured between spaced apart arms 130 secured to a pivot pin 108 having fixed thereto a spring-loaded aim 134 which co-operates with cam-follower mechanism 146 including a pin 162 which engages a cam-plate 80 adjustably secured to a gear 34 in the drive to the rollers 40. Risers 86 on the cam-plate, one for each roller raises the arm 134 in opposition to the spring 138 to raise the pressing pin to permit flow through the tube 74A. When the lock assembly 78 is released a hook 54 releases a portion 124 to release a resilient pressure pad 120 so that the tube 74A is released from contact with the pin 128 at the same time as the tubes 74 are released from contact with the platen so that permanent deformation of the tube 74A is prevented. Screws 158 in elongated slots in a lever arm 156 permit fine adjustment of the spacing between the pin 128 and tube 74A. The pump is for use as a sampling device wherein the tubes 74 carry samples of liquids with one or more reagents and the tube 74A a volume of immiscible gas. The tubes are connected to a single common outlet tube in which the liquids and reagents are mixed, with the tube 74A periodically discharging a volume of gas thereto to separate the liquids into separate segments.
