Abstract

1,190,733. Surgical swabs. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 12 July, 1967 [16 April, 1966; 5 Oct., 1966], Nos. 16773/66 and 44472/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division C3] A surgical swab is made of a foamed synthetic plastics material and incorporates a material which is detectable by X-rays and/or an electro-magnetic field. In particular the swab may comprise foamed polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, or polyurethane and the detectable material may comprise a metallic ribbon, finely divided metal particles or a synthetic plastic thread, filament, or a disc-shaped or squareshaped member incorporating an X-ray opaque substance such as barium sulphate. Suitable metals comprise barium, iron or iron oxide, strontium, thorium, lead, and tungsten. The detectable material may be incorporated in the centre of a two or three layered swab. The swab may be of coloured material and the X-ray opaque thread may have a sinuous outline.
