Abstract

1,190,719. Propeller shaft seals. NIPPON OIL SEAL INDUSTRY CO. Ltd. 13 Jan., 1969 [16 Jan., 1968], No. 1894/69. Heading F2B. A propeller shaft seal comprises one or more pairs of sealing elements each element including a cover 3 or 19, a seal retainer 9 or 14 for holding a face-type ring 12 or 13, inner and outer resilient rings 7, 8 or 16, 17 for mounting the seal retainer within an annular groove provided in the cover, and spring means 5 or 22 interposed between the cover and seal retainer. As shown, a pair of elements are provided on each side of the stern member 2 and an inflatable seal 27 is also provided and supplied with compressed air for use during seal failure or replacement. The rings 7, 8, 16 and 17 can roll in use to permit tilting of the rubbing seal faces, the conical surfaces of the seal retainers being provided, if desired, with a heat-insulating coating of rubber or a synthetic.
